RTI with Dual-Language Learners: Lessons Learned for Tier 2 and 3 Interventions

The purpose of this presentation is to discuss the unique needs of dual-language learners who receive quality core classroom instruction yet struggle in their language and literacy development. Dr. Gorman will first give an overview of the extant literature on Tier 2 and 3 instruction involving dual-language learners. She will then discuss the development of the tiered intervention program implemented by the Wisconsin Reading Acquisition Program (WRAP), an Early Reading First project sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education. The language and literacy outcomes of dual-language preschoolers who have participated in this program will be presented. Finally, a summary of lessons learned and evidence-based recommendations for identification of struggling dual-language learners, intervention procedures and intensity will be discussed.
